Accra, May 14, GNA - Ghana Cement (GHACEM) Limited
on Friday announced the introduction of a new type of
cement with enhanced setting time and increased
strength to meet the demands of all users. The new
cement, known as "GHACEM Super Strength Portland
Cement Class 42.5 Newton" replaces the Standard
Portland Cement, which has been in use for the last 36
years.
Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah, Marketing Manager of
GHACEM, said the new product was introduced against
the background that customers would be able to use
the high quality cement to produce new concrete
structures that met the needs of a modern industry in
Ghana. He said the Company invested eight million
dollars in plant and equipment in its Tema and Takoradi
Factories to enable it to come out with the new product.
Dr Dawson-Ahmoah was speaking at a "GHACEM
Cement Academy" workshop organised to educate
building and structural engineers and contractors on
basic raw material technology; material selection;
specification and measurement; manufacturing and
curing processes and concrete technology mixes. He
said the Company would soon begin mining limestone
in the Eastern Region to manufacture cement. He said:
"This will certainly reduce consumption and
dependence on imported raw materials and freight rates
as well as reduce production costs. "It would also
create more job avenues for Ghanaians and make a
positive impact in reducing the balance of payment
deficit of the country."
Mr Kwadwo Affram Asiedu, Deputy Minister of Trade,
Industry and President's Special Initiatives,
congratulated GHACEM for its role in the development
of infrastructure in Ghana for nearly 40 years. He said
cement was a critical input in the building and
construction, adding that the industry was undergoing
technological changes worldwide and Ghana must not
be left behind. He urged participants to take the
workshop seriously to avoid waste and shoddy work in
the building and construction business.
Ghana’s largest producer of cement has introduced
Ghacem Super Strong, a new product, onto the
Ghanaian market to meet the growing needs of precast
concrete manufacturers and block makers in the
country.
This was done at a colorful launch at the Ghacem
premises at Tema.
The new Ghacem Super Strong is higher-grade cement
with an improved package. It has a finer texture
compared to other grades, gives consumers extra
blocks than the other grades as well as stronger than
the other grades.
The company has been in the production of grade
42.5N bulk cement, known as Ghacem extra and the
32.5R known as Ghacem Super Rapid since its
establishment. With the addition of this new product,
Ghacem can now boast of being the only cement
manufacturing company with three different products.
In accordance with the industry practice, different
types of cements are meant for different jobs; hence
the decision by Ghacem to introduce the new grade of
cement as the construction sector in Ghana continues
to grow.
The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Morten
Gade said in an interview at the event to launch the
new product, “We want Ghanaians to be aware of the
varied uses of cement to ensure that they get exactly
what they want from a particular product”.
He added that Ghacem Super Strong cement is
beneficial to block makers because with its finer
texture, they can produce more and stronger blocks
leading to stronger buildings, therefore they should
make it their number one friend. He also advised
consumers to desist from using one grade of cement
for all works.
Ghacem has carved a niche in the cement market in
the country and continue to be the top most used
cement till date. The introduction of this new product
is a testament of Ghacem’s quest to consistently
satisfy the growing market needs for the 42.5R grade
of cement.
The Commercial Director og Ghacem, Philip Archer
said the new product is one of the greatest
achievements of Ghacem as they are poised to sustain
their position as market leaders in the industry.
Mr. Archer added that with this new development,
Ghacem would continue to develop strategies to meet
the needs of consumers.
Ghacem established in 1967, is the leading cement
company in Ghana popularly known as ‘The Nation
Builder’ and has played important role of building
Ghana for almost 50 years.
Ghacem has two cement grinding plants in Tema and
Takoradi with a total installed capacity of 4.2 million
tons, a network of sales offices and depots throughout
the country.
