President John Mahama frequently travels outside the
country for government business and for pleasure
sometimes.
Here are five times that he made news for the wrong
reasons while abroad:
1. When he attended an anti-corruption summit in
London this year
Everything was going well when President Mahama
attended an anti-corruption summit organised by the
UK government in London in May until he came face to
face with BBC journalist Peter Nwokoche. When the
journalist asked him if he had ever received a bribe,
the president appeared to hesitate before responding
in the negative . The development provoked national
criticism back home, with many Ghanaians
questioning why he hesitated in answering the
question if he had indeed not received a bribe before.
2. “Dead goat syndrome”
John Mahama
During an interaction with the Ghanaian community in
Bostwana in 2015, President Mahama was asked how
he would deal with strikes by trade unions ahead of
elections in 2016..
He replied that he had seen more demonstrations and
strikes in his first two years and that he did not think
it could get worse.
“It is said that when you kill a goat and you frighten it
with a knife, it doesn’t fear the knife because it is
dead already. I have a dead goat syndrome,” he said.
That earned him the nickname ‘dead goat’ and
prompted a section of the public to describe him as
uncaring.

3. Visit to Scottish parliament
The President was criticised when he visited the
Scotiish parliament in April 2016 by pro-gay minority
MPs over Ghana’s anti-homosexuality laws. A picture
of the first gentleman and other top government
functionaries looking forlorn went viral on social
media, drawing questions as to why president Mahama
accepted the invitation in the first place, especially as
he was made the sit in the gallery.
4. Holidaying in Dubai
After relentlessly calling on Ghanaians to patronise
made-in-Ghana goods in 2014, President Mahama
proceeded to travel to Dubai for his holidays. This
prompted some members of the public to describe his
conduct as hypocritical. The president appeared to
take note of the criticism as he spent his 2015
holidays in his hometown of Bole Bamboi.
5. CNN photo op.
While attending the UN general assembly in 2013,
President Mahama headed to the studios of CNN in
Atlanta for an interactive session.
After the interview, the president posed for pictures in
front of the building. This drew condemnation from
many Ghanaians who deemed his conduct
unpresidential.
